Research

Research areas

The research I develop seeks to understand the cognitive, emotional and behavioural processes that influence how we perceive the world, make decisions and relate to one another.

I have developed research on different dimensions of human cognition, integrating an evolutionary perspective and combining experimental methods with behavioural and psychophysiological measures.

I have coordinated projects funded by the Fundação BIAL, the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and the Marsden Fund, of the Royal Society of New Zealand, in the areas of time perception, interpersonal attractiveness and cognitive processes.

Time perception

How we estimate the passage of time and how emotional and social stimuli distort that perception.

Attention and perception

The processes that determine what we pay attention to and how we interpret what surrounds us.

Decision-making

Choices in contexts of uncertainty, risk and reinforcement.

Attractiveness and romantic relationships

Interpersonal preferences, attractiveness and the dynamics of intimate relationships.

Evolutionary perspective

The origins and functions of the cognitive, emotional and behavioural processes that characterise us.

Animal and comparative cognition

The study of learning and cognition across different species, to understand what we have in common and what sets us apart.
